Google announces an update to its search algorithm

Monday 23 January, 2012
Google today announced a change to its algorithm in effort to help users find more high quality websites in search results.  This change is in response to users complaints that if they click on a search result,  it can be difficult for the user to find the actual content they were looking for on the web page.

This algorithmic change, looks at the layout of a webpage and the amount of content you can see on the page that is visible on your computers screen. This portion of the screen is commonly known as visible "above the fold". Of coarse visible "above the fold" will vary depending on what resolution you have your screen set at - A resolution of 1280x1024 will show more content than 800x600, so given this its not clear where Google consider the fold to be.

This algorithmic change should impact 1% of searches globally and affect sites where there is only a small amount of visible content above the fold due to large blocks of ads or images. Theses sites may not rank as highly as they did before the change.

How will this affect my online store?
Good news is that Your Online Shop designed online stores, already have the main content on the home page, product page above the fold. However, because you can design and modify the look of your stores home page, if you find that you have placed large image above the main text, you may want to change this.

How can you take advantage of this algorithm change?
Whenever Google change their algorithm, its always a great opportunity to improve where your store appears in search results and get one up on your competitors. Google constantly crawl your online store and will pick up any changes you make. Take some time to have a look at your home page and ensure you have plenty of text on it that is above the fold. Change the wording to include important search keywords and phrases. Remove or use smaller images and ensure images have names that include important keywords.
Remember, it can take several weeks for Google to crawl and process enough pages on your site to reflect any layout changes you may have made.
